Collaborative opportunities

Networks and collaborations have been developed through two methods. First, we held scientific workshops in areas where opportunities for collaboration were clear but the UK-Singapore relationship had opportunities for development. These subjects were identified through discussion with UK Research Council Chief Executives, academics and senior contacts in the UK and Singapore. As a result, workshops and seminars have been held in areas such as advanced materials, stem cells, chemistry, drug discovery and energy technologies.

Collaborations haven also been cemented by a programme of "Collaboration Development Awards". Over 100 researchers from Singapore and Malaysia undertook funded visits to the UK. This resulted in 14 immediate collaborations, a further 14 submissions to funding bodies for support, and 43 potential collaborations also identified.

As a result of this initial success, further Collaborative Development Awards are now offered following each workshop. A key aim is sustainability. Our funding brings partners together, but the ultimate test will be the collaborative results that flow from each partnership.
