The event earmarked a series of activities that would take place with key local partners involved in sports, as London counts down to 27 Jul 2012.

The event was graced by MG(NS) Chan Chun Sing, Singapore’s Acting Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports. Singapore former Olympians – sprinter C Kunalan (Tokyo 1964 and Mexico City 1968) and footballer Chia Boon Leong (London 1948) – were present at the event and received Olympic pins from the High Commissioner, in recognition of their contribution to Singapore’s sporting legacy.

“Through detailed legacy plans, the UK Government will make sure that as well as delivering a once in a lifetime event for thousands of sportsmen and women, we also deliver the greatest possible benefit for Britain economically and socially as well,” said the High Commissioner. “It’s to this end that we in the High Commission, along with our colleagues in other missions, will be spending the next 365 days highlighting the opportunity that the Games offer to countries, companies and citizens around the world.”

“I have always felt a particular resonance for this message here is Singapore. In 2005, it was in Singapore that London won the race to host the 2012 Games,” he said, before applauding the efforts by the British Chambers for the Dream 2012 initiative, Singapore for hosting the inaugural Youth Olympic Games, and the National Youth Achievement Award Council for an upcoming photo competition themed “The Sporting Spirit”.

More than 50 people attended to celebrate the occasion. They included representatives from the British Association, British Chamber of Commerce Singapore, the British Club, British Council, and Visit Britain. Key local partners involved in promoting the Olympics, such as the National Youth Achievement Award Council, the Singapore Disability Sports Council, the Singapore National Paralympic Council and the Singapore Sports Council were also represented.
