The areas we cover

‘The UK can be a global hub in the 21st Century. We are dedicated to playing our part in making it happen.’ David Miliband, Foreign Secretary and Peter Ricketts, FCO Permanent Under Secretary

Political and Communications
The political section of the High Commission, sometimes referred to as Chancery, is responsible for promoting government-to-government links between the UK and Singapore.

It manages bilateral government co-operation (in areas such as counter-terrorism, environmental), explains the British position on international issues, builds support for UK policies and views, oversees the Chevening Scholarships Scheme for Singapore, and keeps London informed of important developments in Singapore and the region, which affect British interests.

Communications: The role of the Communications Team is wide-ranging. They promote Britain and British policy on a range of themes, promoting in particular the High Commission's key objectives. They brief the Singapore media and other opinion formers, and respond to general queries about the UK.

Trade & Investment
Promoting British business interests in Singapore is a major part of the High Commission's work. Singapore is one of the UK's key markets in Asia Pacific. Its strategic location, first class infrastructure, use of the English language and legal system make it a popular location in the region for British business activity.

The Trade & Investment Section works closely with the British Chamber of Commerce in Singapore, and supports the work of the Singapore British Business Council.

Defence
The UK's close defence relationship with Singapore is based on historical links, the UK's active engagement in the region and our membership of the long standing Five Powers Defence Arrangements (FPDA), together with Singapore, Malaysia, Australia and New Zealand.

The Defence Section liaises closely with Singapore's military authorities, helps with training, assists inward and outward visits and promotes the sale of British military equipment.

Consular and Visa
Consular staff will do everything they properly can to help British people in difficulty in Singapore. In addition, key consular services include issuing passports and registering births and deaths.

Visa application centre at Robinson processes visa or entry clearance applications for people intending to visit, settle, work or study in the UK, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, and the UK Overseas Territories.

Science and Innovation
Science and Innovation section monitors developments in a key sector for the UK and spots opportunities for UK/Singapore partnerships and interaction, both in the commercial and academic sectors.

It works closely with Trade & Investment Section.

Management
The good management of the High Commission is essential to the success of our work. The Management Section is responsible not only for our budget and the day to day running of the offices, but also housing for UK based staff and local pay and conditions of service.

Specialist colleagues provide IT and technical works support, both within the High Commission and on a regional basis.

The Regional Training Centre (RTC): Singapore is part of a global network of FCO training centres. The Regional Learning & Development Manager delivers ‘soft skills’ training, co-ordinates training services, provides advice to posts on good management practice by running periodic health checks to ensure posts are complying with the Investors in People Standard.

We're driven by our strategic international aims and objectives. They reflect today's world and they're both challenging and significant.
