How to register a birth

We aim to process applications for birth registration within five working days.

A Singapore birth certificate is sufficient for most purposes, including British passport applications however consular birth registration can provide your child with a British-style birth certificate and a permanent and accessible record of the birth registration with the General Register Office in the UK.

To register the birth, bring originals of the documents numbered 2 through 5 below  plus one photocopy of each.  The originals can then be sighted and returned to you on the spot while we retain the photocopies for the registration process.

1) Download and complete the Birth Registration Form [PDF, 32KB, opens in new window], or obtain one when you come to the Consular Section for the registration.

2) the child’s local birth certificate.

3) the parents' marriage certificate (if applicable)

4) both parents' passports and full length birth certificates * i.e. where their parents' names are included.

5) divorce certificates, decree absolute (if applicable)

6) The fee. There is a charge for this service. Please refer to our Consular fee page for more information.

* Full length birth certificates can be ordered online through the General Register Office of England and Wales, the General Register Office for birth in Scotland and the General Register Office for Northern Ireland.  Their contact details are given below.
