Singapore as a legal services and education hub
Singapore's status as a top class arbitration centre is recognised internationally. A 2007 report published by the ICC International Court of Arbitration ranked Singapore as the top city in Asia for ICC arbitrations and one of the five most popular arbitration venues since 2000, alongside Paris, London, Geneva and Zurich.
In a series of steps taken to develop Singapore's status as a regional legal services and education hub, the government has made significant moves on the liberalisation of the legal practice and Legal Education. Read more

Singapore economic snippets
1) Singapore's manufacturing output rises 12.4%
Singapore's manufacturing output increased by 23.0% in July 2009. Excluding biomedical manufacturing, output increased 7.7% in July over June 2009. The pharmaceuticals sector was the key driver of the growth with a 139.2 percent jump in output.
2) UK Financial Secretary, RT Hon Stephen Timms MP, signs tax agreement in Singapore
Singapore and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland has signed a protocol amending the Agreement for the avoidance of double taxation (“DTA”). This is the third agreement Singapore has signed that incorporates the new internationally agreed Standard for the exchange of information upon request for tax purposes, as part of the comprehensive re-negotiation of the Singapore-UK DTA.
3) Temasek polishes image as commercially-run company
Singapore's sovereign wealth fund adopted a new charter on 25 Aug, which underlines its commercial orientation. It also reaffirmed its plans to open up to outside investors. Due to losses in the financial sector, the fund's portfolio shrank to about £54 bn (down from £78 bn in Nov 2008).
