- Two thirds of F1 teams are based in the UK - McLaren Mercedes, AT&T, Williams, Mercedes GP Petronas, Renault, Red Bull Racing, Force India, Virgin Racing and Team Lotus F1.
- The UK also has two of the most globally renowned motor sports development facilities anywhere in the world – Millbrook and MIRA.
- The UK Motorsport industry employs over 25,000 world-class engineers, while more than 20 UK universities offer motorsport engineering and management degrees. The sector also supports 38,500 jobs.
- 11 of the world’s volume vehicle manufacturers have a UK presence, supported by 19 of the world’s top 20 suppliers.
- Approximately 1.3 million cars and commercial vehicles were produced in the UK in 2010, more than 70 per cent of vehicles made in the UK are sold overseas.
- Contributing £10.3 billion to the UK economy, automotive manufacturing currently accounts for around 13 per cent of the UK’s manufacturing exports and attracts significant levels of FDI. It directly employs 180,000 people accounting for nearly 6 per cent of employment in UK manufacturing.
- It is estimated that another 200,000 are employed supplying essential parts and services, with a further 535,000 jobs in the car retail and service sectors.
