UK/Singapore - Partnerships for Global Growth in Infrastructure

Singapore has long been one of the UK’s major trading partners. UK exports of
goods to Singapore in 2008 were £2.73bn. But just as importantly, Singapore
has provided a springboard and a bridge to ASEAN, China, India and the Middle
East. UK Exports to the ASEAN market totalled £5.44bn.

The use of English as the official language of administration, its well-respected
legal system, transparency and corporate governance, make Singapore a
conducive place for British companies to do business. Singapore’s multi-cultural
mix comprising Chinese, Indians and Malays, coupled with its knowledge of
regional business practices and common languages, makes Singapore the ideal
springboard for UK companies entering the region.

Economic indicators point to global growth being centred in Asia in the years
ahead with governments in Asia committing billions of dollars in their
infrastructural developments. Asia, particularly China and India, will play a
pivotal role in leading the world out of the global recession.

With the support of UKTI and the Singapore Economic Development Board, the
Singapore British Business Council has organised a forum to focus on the
business opportunities in infrastructure in Asia that British companies can
leverage on, using Singapore’s experience. At the SBBC forum, attendees will
have a unique opportunity to hear first-hand from Singapore’s speakers who
have distinguished themselves through their achievements in regional
infrastructural projects. UK speakers will highlight the contributions in particular
areas of expertise that UK companies can contribute to partnerships in the
region.

The forum would be led by Dr Lee Boon Yang, who has had a distinguished
political career as a Minister of the Singapore Cabinet. In his current capacity as Chairman of Keppel Corporation, a Singapore Government-Linked Company
with a global reach spanning 35 countries, Dr Lee will highlight Keppel’s leading
role in regional infrastructural developments, including the Suzhou Industrial
Park and the Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City in China. The forum will provide:

  • Briefing on key opportunities within infrastructure in Singapore & the
    region
  • Case study presentations
  • Networking with major UK & Singaporean players with a presence in the
    market
