Networks and collaborations have been developed through two methods. First, we held scientific workshops in areas where opportunities for collaboration were clear but the UK-Singapore relationship had opportunities for development. These subjects were identified through discussion with UK Research Council Chief Executives, academics and senior contacts in the UK and Singapore. As a result, workshops and seminars have been held in areas such as advanced materials, stem cells, chemistry, drug discovery and energy technologies.
Collaborations haven also been cemented by a programme of "Collaboration Development Awards". Over 140 researchers from Singapore and Malaysia undertook funded visits to the UK. Almost 80 new collaborations have resulted from these funded trips.
As a result of this initial success, further Collaborative Development Awards are now offered following each workshop. A key aim is sustainability. Our funding brings partners together, but the ultimate test will be the collaborative results that flow from each partnership.
